Happy Friday the 13th and welcome to: Your Weekly Dose! With it being spooOOooOOooOOpy season AND Friday the 13th we wanted to delve into a "scary," :"spooky," animal related superstition.

The black cat superstition. I’m sure most of us have been warned about the bad luck that comes if you cross paths with a black cat, but do you know why? Well, this superstition is rooted all the way back to the 13th century when the Catholic church declared that black cats were incarnates of Satan. From there, other believed that black cats were secretly witches, and the 9 lives came from the number of times that a witch could transform into a cat to disguise and hide their identity. Black cats were also blamed for the spreading of the Bubonic plague.

But did you know about the positive superstitions surrounding black cats? In theater, black cats are considered to be good luck. It is said that if a black cat appears on opening night, the show will be successful. In some countries, including Japan, it is believed that having a black cat in the house will help people find good spouses and loving marriages. Ancient Egyptians worshiped black cats and viewed them as magical beings that would bring good luck, not bad!

We here at The FARMacy at PETSinc think that black cats are often misunderstood. So maybe this spoopy season and Friday the 13th, we have inspired you to believe in the positive superstitions surrounding black cats. And if you’re feeling really inspired, here are some black cats currently available for adoption at PETSinc.!
